Melbourne, Lady Pirates keep rivalry rolling

Thursday, November 13, 2008

Last year, every time the Melbourne Lady Bearkatz and Calico Rock Lady Pirates squared off against each other, fans knew they were in for a special game.

And by the way things looked Nov. 4 at Melbourne, there may be more of the same in 2008 when these Izard County rivals go at it.

With Calico Rock trailing 59-58 in overtime, Lady Pirate Brittany Fountain stuck back a Hannah Wright miss with 0.8 on the clock, giving Calico Rock a thrilling 60-59 victory.

In five meetings last season, the Lady Katz (4-1) managed to post a 3-2 record against Calico Rock (5-1).

The Lady Pirates led 18-17 after the first period and 27-25 at the half.

Melbourne rallied to push in front 45-42 after three periods of play before the Lady Pirates locked the game at 57-all, sending the contest to an extra frame.

Wright paced Calico Rock with 15 points, while Fountain chipped in with 12, including the game-winner.

Melbourne was led by Maggie Cooper's game-high 25, with Maggie Caraway adding 12.

Tori Rush finished with nine, Kaylee Ables eight, Amanda Treat three and Sara Adams two.

In the boys' game, the Bearkatz topped the Pirates 57-37.

Spencer Caraway led Melbourne with 23 points, while Chase Massey added 11.
