Local Medicare fairs slated

Thursday, November 13, 2008

Medicare beneficiaries will have an opportunity to sign up for a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan beginning Nov. 15 through Dec. 31, the open enrollment period for all beneficiaries. For 2009 there are 52 Medicare Prescription Drug Plans available in Arkansas. Twenty-seven of these plans have no deductibles; at least one plan has a low premium of $13 monthly and 12 of the plans have a $0 premium for people who qualify for extra help.

Medicare reminds Medicare beneficiaries to review and compare their current drug coverage with the plans available in 2009. Many of the 2009 plans have premiums that are the same or less than the premiums for 2008. Also, beneficiaries should check to see if they qualify for the Low Income Subsidy or Extra Help.

To assist Medicare beneficiaries, the White River Area Agency on Aging, has planned the following Enrollment Fairs to help persons compare their current drug coverage. Staff will be on hand to help persons compare their current Part D coverage or help persons enroll in a prescription drug plan. Individuals and families can also compare coverage by going on line to www.medicare.gov. For more information on the Enrollment Fairs call 800-382-3205.

Medicare beneficiaries should bring their Medicare card, Social Security card and current medications to the enrollment fair. The dates are as follows:

Nov. 18 -- Ozarka College, Ash Flat, Ark., 8 a.m. to noon; Nov. 19 -- White River Rural Health, 721 Hwy. 64 E, Augusta, 9 a.m. to noon; Nov. 20 -- North Arkansas Electric Cooperative, Salem, 8 a.m. to noon; Nov. 21 -- First Service Bank, Clinton, 9 a.m. to noon; Nov. 25 -- Arkansas State University, Heber Springs, Ark., 9 a.m. to noon; and Nov. 26 -- Ozarka College, Mountain View, Ark., 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
