Bears split with Viola

The Mammoth Spring Bears used a 17-9 push in the fourth period to top Viola 39-27 Nov. 18 at the Longhorn Corral.

Mammoth Spring led 5-4 after a low-scoring first period and 14-12 at the half.

Seth Godwin (14 points, five assists) and Jonathan Marler both made four out of five free throws late in the game to seal the deal for the Bears. Caleb Brown logged nine points for the Bears, while Trevor Vincent had eight.

Viola was paced by Blake Baumunk's nine points.

In the girls' contest, Viola knocked off the Lady Bears 41-29.

The Lady Longhorns led 6-0 after the first period and 16-6 at the half. Mammoth Spring rallied in the third and by the period's end, only trailed 27-20. But the Lady Horns ended the game strong to remain unbeaten at 8-0 on the season.

Leslie Barker posted 17 points for Viola, while Chasidy Hutson added nine.

The Lady Bears fell to Izard County 61-59 in overtime Nov. 21 at Mammoth Spring.

The game was locked at 53-all after four periods of play.

Rachel Harmon led the Lady Cougars with 18 points, with Sarah Taylor and Trisha Arnold tossing in 16 points apiece.

Jessy Jo Vest and Sierra Smoot scored 14 points each for Mammoth Spring. Shelby Frey added 11, with Amy Young and Bianca Paige finishing with 10 points apiece.

The Bears evened things out with a 57-24 win over the Cougars later in the evening.

Trevor Vincent tallied a game-high 27 points for Mammoth Spring. Godwin added 14 points, six assists and five steals. Mammoth Spring led 20-4 after the first period and 33-12 at the half.

Gage Wolford scored five points for Izard County.

In the junior boys' game, Garrett Wooldridge drove baseline and passed to Wayne Coffey in the lane, who put the ball in at the buzzer to give the junior Bears a 32-30 win. Coffey had 10 points, including the game-winner, and seven boards for the 9-0 junior Bears, with Houston Cooper logging nine points.

Trenton Hatman and Jordan Everett finished with 10 points apiece for the junior Cougars.
