The Ash Flat City Council announced former Police Chief Mike Zeiger's resignation and the hiring of Anthony Wiles at the Nov. 17 council meeting. Zeiger's last day was Nov. 21 leaving Wiles as the senior officer until a chief is hired.
Ash Flat Mayor Danny Traw said the city plans to take their time hiring a chief. "We're going to give Anthony some time and see how he likes it," Traw said. "When the time comes to hire a chief, Anthony will have the opportunity to apply for the position."
Traw said Wiles is a great person and worker and he is doing a very good job. "We want someone who is compliant and can and will be there when we need them," Traw said.
Wiles who has been in police work since 2001, said this is the first time he has had a position like this and he is learning as he goes. He said it's not that much different than normal except for the paper work. Wiles said Zeiger was there for about three days to help him get started but it will take more than three days to learn everything.
Wiles started as a volunteer police officer for Cherokee Village in 2001, working for the city and the Sharp County Sheriff's Department as a reserve deputy for a couple of years.
Wiles said he became a full-time officer in 2003 and went through the academy in 2004. He has worked for Highland, Cherokee Village and Ash Flat.
Wiles said the officers are receiving him well and they are great men to work with. "I went to school with a lot of these guys," Wiles said about the officers, not just in Ash Flat but the surrounding towns. He said he will probably apply for the chief's position when it comes open.
"If there is anyone in the area that has questions or concerns, they are welcome to call me at the police department," Wiles said. The police department number is 870-994-3061.
