The Calico Rock Lady Pirates made it two wins in a row this year over the Viola Lady Longhorns with a 41-27 victory in the quarterfinals of the Lyon College Invitational Tournament at Becknell Gymnasium in Batesville Dec. 11.
Viola trailed 25-18 after three periods of play and managed to hold Calico Rock to just two field goals in the fourth, both coming late in the stanza. The only problem was, the Lady Pirates shot an outstanding 12-for-14 from the charity stripe in the game's last eight minutes to hold the Lady Horns at bay. Hannah Wright was responsible for eight of those free throws for Calico Rock in the fourth. She paved the way with a game-high 17 points for the Lady Pirates.
Viola's Chasidy Hutson also had a big fourth, tossing in seven of her team-high 11 points in the last period of play.
A jumper in the lane from Huston with 1:59 left in the game pulled Viola within four, 30-26.
But Calico Rock went on an 11-1 scoring spree the last two minutes of play, to end the game on top.
Neither side could get a whole lot accomplished on the offensive end in a low-scoring first half, as turnovers and cold shooting ruled the half.
The Lady Horns did jump in front 4-0 on two free throws from Leslie Barker (four points) and a layup from Kristen Montgomery.
Calico Rock's first points of the afternoon came midway into the first on a layup by Brittany Fountain (eight points). Kori Lamb (six points) added two charity tosses and Taylor Cox (six points) uncorked a jumper to give Calico Rock a 6-4 lead after one.
The Lady Pirates edged in front by nine, 19-10, at the half, as Wright closed the book on the first half with a trey at the buzzer.
Opening the third with back-to-back buckets by Hutson, Viola chipped into Calico Rock's lead, pulling within five, 19-14.
But that was as close as Viola would get in the third, as the Lady Pirates held a 25-18 advantage after three.
Taylor Griggs finished with five points for Viola, while Heather Simmons and Elisabeth Collins tallied two points apiece. Dedra Johnston had one point for the Lady Longhorns.
Jennifer Tunnicliff and Miranda Jones logged two points each for Calico Rock.
In the opening round on Dec. 10, the Lady Longhorns knocked off Midland 44-34.
Viola led 13-6 after the first period, 23-17 at the half and 30-23 after three.
Griggs led the way with 18 points, while Hutson added nine and Simmons seven.
The Lady Pirates started the tournament off with a 55-34 win over Mammoth Spring Dec. 6.
Wright tallied 14 points for Calico Rock, while Lamb and Fountain posted 10 points each.
