Carpenter trial slated

Tuesday, December 30, 2008

The pre-trial and jury trial date for a Glencoe man who is charged, along with two others, with the capital murder of a Stone County man is Jan. 9 with the jury trial scheduled for March 10.

Steven Carpenter, 26, of Glencoe, is charged with the murder of Kagen Futrell. If a continuance is ordered for Carpenter's case it will be scheduled for April 1-3, according to the Stone County Clerk's Office.

Futrell, 19, went missing March 27 and was last seen the day before. His beaten and stabbed body was eventually found in a shallow grave March 28 around Parma Road in Stone County.

The other two charged in connection with the murder are Mark Blackford, 19, and David Tidwell, 34, both of Stone County.

Special Agent Dennis Simons of the Arkansas State Police spoke with Futrell's mother, Paula Collins, who said in a sworn document that she had seen Futrell March 25 after he had come back from Batesville on a methamphetamine run. She said her son then went to Stone County that night to sell some of the meth.

Carpenter, Blackford and Tidwell picked up Futrell at a friend's house March 26.

In Blackford's mirandized statement, he said the three brought Futrell to a wooded area that had been recently hit by a tornado. Blackford claimed in his statement that the trio believed Futrell was an undercover police informant, but his statement was the only one with this information.

Blackford said Tidwell and Carpenter beat Futrell with a shovel then repeatedly stabbed him to death.

According to the Stone County Clerk's Office, Blackford and Tidwell's pre-trial and jury trial are scheduled for the same date as Carpenter's. However, if a continuance is issued, their trial will be scheduled for April 21-24.
