The Alpena Leopards managed to overcome an early deficit to slide past the Viola Longhorns 49-40 in the second round of the 33rd annual North Arkansas College Senior Boys' Tournament Jan. 7 at Pioneer Pavilion in Harrison.
The 10-seeded Longhorns ripped off the first seven points of the game and led 14-3 in the first period.
But Alpena, the number-seven seed, chipped off six straight points to pull within 14-9 after one.
Viola took a 22-21 lead to intermission, but in the third period, the Leopards finally pushed past the Horns to hold a 30-28 advantage heading into the fourth period.
Alpena built its lead to seven points in the final frame, but Viola did pull within five points with under a half-minute left on the clock.
That was as close as the Longhorns could manage to get and Alpena held on for the nine-point win.
Blake Baumunk and Jackson Rains paced Viola with 10 points apiece.
Marlin Coggins added eight, Dylan Holstine had seven and Jordan Cotter four points.
Jacob Payne finished the game with one point for the Longhorns.
