Iona Cartwell of Viola, Ark., daughter of the late Charley Dixon and Lee Jackson Dixon, was born June 28, 1910, in Viola, Ark. She died June 28, 2009, at Southfork River Therapy and Living Center in Salem at the age of 98.
She was united in marriage to Everett Cartwell on Nov. 15, 1927, at Depew, Okla. She was a cook for many years at various restaurants and at the Boy Scout Camp. She was a member of the Viola Baptist Church.
Survivors include: Her daughters, Velma Sublett of Cotter; Thelma Smith of Raytown, Mo., and Lois Daniel and husband Gerald of Viola; one daughter-in-law, Augean Cartwell of Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters-in-law, Dolly Dixon of Santa Ana, Calif., and Inez Burns of Viola; one brother-in-law, Kenneth Cartwell of Benton, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Gene Sublett and wife Sandra, Randy Sublett and wife Karen, Terry Sexton and wife, Pauline, Linda Qualls and husband Bob, Velda Spencer Cartwell, Michael Cartwell, Teresa Talbert and husband John and Vicky Cartwell; 18 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; 3 step-great- great-grand-children; nieces; nephews; and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Harold William; a grandson, Ricky Cartwell; two sons-in-law, Harold Sublett and Verlin Smith; three sisters; Lois and Vernice Dixon and Onah Dihel; six brothers; Otis, Troy, Youlen, Boyce and the twins, Loyd and Floyd, who died in August and October of 2008.
Funeral services were held Feb. 2 at Cox-Blevins Chapel with burial in Viola Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of the Cox-Blevins Funeral Home of Salem.
