Top two Class 3A teams at it again

Thursday, February 12, 2009

Round two was every bit as hard-fought as round one between the top two girls' Class 3A teams in the state Feb. 6.

And just like the first meeting a few weeks ago, number two knocked off number one in overtime again.

This time, it was second-ranked Valley Springs (28-4, 10-1) that slipped past top-ranked Cave City (22-3, 11-1) 41-39 in overtime at Valley Springs, handing the Cavewomen their first loss in 3A-1 East play.

Cave City had topped the Lady Tigers by two points in overtime when the two squads met in Cave City in their first clash of the season.

Valley Springs led 10-7 after the first period and 15-12 at the half before the Cavewomen rallied to tie the contest at 21-all after three and 38-all at the end of regulation.

Cheyenne Childers paced Cave City with 14 points.

The Cavewomen used a huge run to blast Flippin 55-25 in 3A-1 East play Feb. 3 in Cave City.

Cave City outscored the Lady Bobcats 22-3 in the second period to take a 41-16 lead at intermission.

Childers led the way with 13 points, six rebounds and five steals. Haley Bell added 11 points and six boards, while Amelia Bray had seven points, seven assists and five steals. Brittany Landers tallied six points and Jessica Hall had five. Lindsey Wooldridge finished with three points, with Megan Graddy, Brooklyn Brinkley, Rachel Roebuck and Bionca Cook posting two points apiece. Tiffany England and Whitney Bell scored one point each for the Cavewomen.

In boys' action, Flippin spoiled senior night for Cave City by topping the Cavemen 58-55.

Zac Smith led Cave City (3-16, 2-9) with 17 points. Seth Foreman tallied 13 points and five steals, with Brandon Gillihan notching 10 points.
