Helen Underwood

Helen Underwood was born Sept. 23, 1912, in Jobe, Mo., the daughter of Johnnie Pingleton and Issie Bell Combs Pingleton. She died Jan. 31, 2009, in Thayer, Mo., at the age of 96.

She was united in marriage April 2, 1932, at Alton, Mo., to Ralph Underwood Sr., who preceded her in death Oct. 22, 1990.

Besides being a homemaker, Helen was co-owner and operator of Underwood Feed and Grocery for 36 years with her husband.

She was a charter member of Thayer Free Will Baptist Church and a member of the Jolly Workers Club.

She is survived by: her son, Ralph Underwood Jr. and wife, Lucille of Thayer; two grandsons, Jed Underwood and wife, Sandy of Thayer and Jim Underwood and wife, Shelley of Thayer; one granddaughter, Jill Underwood of Mountain Home, Ark.; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Grover Pingleton and wife, Jo of Branson, Mo.; three sisters, Lorene Pohnert and husband, Ben of Thayer, Joyce Mills of Wichita, Kan., and Martha Vranes of Portland, Ore.; and two sisters-in-law, Faye Ivey of Springfield, Mo., and May Alford of Thayer.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; and four brothers, Harry Pingleton, Jack Pingleton and two infant brothers.

Funeral services were held Feb. 4 in the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer with Bro. Richard Robinson officiating. Burial followed in the Thayer Cemetery with arrangements by Carter Funeral Home of Thayer, Mo.
