OREGON COUNTY -- The recent ice storm has made everyone in the area aware of the need to be prepared when diasters strike the county.
The American Red Cross is sponsoring shelter operations training events at the St. Paul United Methodist Chuch in Thayer Feb. 27 and 28 at 6 p.m. and at Alton on Feb. 28 at 9 a.m. at the United Methodist Church's Community Worship Center.
According to Oregon County Emergency Preparedness Director Eric King, this will establish a pool of volunteers who are trained and prepared. To register call 417-264-3296 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Red Cross will also be conducting a training event at the Alton United Methodist Church's Community Worship Center Feb. 27 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. for persons interested in becoming Disaster Action Team (DAT) members.
King said these will be volunteers who respond to assist those who have been impacted by local, isolated disasters, typically single family fires or natural disasters such as the recent ice storm. He said to pre-register for the training call 417-280-0049.
