A man was found laying in the road in the early morning hours of Jan. 24 near Shelby Town in Oregon County.
Oregon County Chief Deputy Eric King said he received a call from a citizen Jan. 24 at approximately 7:08 a.m. that a man was laying in the road on County Road 268 near Shelby Town.
An ambulance and deputies were dispatched to the scene.
"When we arrived the man was alive but unresponsive," King said.
The man was identified as Daniel E. Ruther, 35. He had been living at Fifth and Tate Street in Mammoth Spring.
Ruther was flown to Baxter Regional Hospital in Mountain Home where he died later that afternoon.
There were no visible signs of injury to Ruther's body.
Because he died at an Arkansas hospital his body was sent to Little Rock for an autopsy. King said he had not heard the results of the autopsy at this time.
He said unofficially he believes the man died from the cold and alcohol, although there are some suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
He said the case is still under investigation.
