Lady Pirates stung by tourney hosts

Thursday, March 5, 2009

The Calico Rock Lady Pirates' string of recent runs to the state basketball tournament came to an end with a 70-65 overtime loss to the Bay Lady Yellowjackets in the opening round of the Class 1A Region 2 Tournament at Bay High School Feb. 26.

The Lady Yellowjackets (16-14) used a big 10-1 run in the extra period to end Calico Rock's (25-7) season.

The game was locked at 51-all with a shade under three minutes left in the fourth period.

All either side could do was manage a free throw apiece in the remaining minutes of regulation and the game went into the extra period squared at 52-all.

Then Bay got busy and went on a 10-1 run to move on top 62-53. The Lady Yellowjackets did not lead in the game until the OT period.

The Lady Pirates managed to pull within five points of the home team, but that was as close as they could get and the Lady Yellowjackets ended the evening with a 70-65 victory.

The Lady Pirates held a 46-39 lead in the fourth period, but Bay refused to stay put and scored five straight points to pull within two, 46-44.

Calico Rock missed some costly free throws down the stretch and the Lady Yellowjackets were only too happy to take advantage of that to eventually tie the game in the waning minutes of regulation.

Emily Johnson scored 17 points for the Lady Pirates, while Emily Jenkins added 12. Brittany Fountain and Hannah Wright tallied eight points apiece. Miranda Jones finished with seven, with Brooke McCurley adding five and Kori Lamb four. Taylor Cox and Sloan Lively logged two points each.
