Couch slams Summersville

Thursday, March 5, 2009

The Couch Lady Indians got off to a blazing start and made fast work out of the Summersville Lady Wildcats in the opening round of the Class 2 District 2 Tournament at Summersville High School Feb. 28.

The top-seeded Lady Indians (23-3) limited the homestanding Lady Wildcats (4-13) to just two field goals and six free throws in the first half of action, helping Couch to a big 65-21 victory over eighth-seeded Summersville.

The Lady Wildcats are in the first year of rebuilding their girls' basketball program and are putting a team on the court for the first time in 20-plus years.

Whitney Mills set the tone in this one early, scoring the first two hoops of the afternoon to give Couch a 4-0 lead. Mills led all scorers with 18 points in just two-and-a-half periods of play.

Tara Combs (10 points) added a jumper in the first, while Jessica Jones (six points) racked up back-to-back buckets and Lorra Wicker (four points) logged a field goal to give the Lady Indians, ranked number five in Class 2, a commanding 18-4 advantage after one.

Katelyn Farrow (seven points) recorded Summerville's lone field goal in the first period, with Lakyn McGee (five points) adding two charity tosses for the Lady Wildcats.

Couch maintained its control of the game in the second period, as Mills logged back-to-back buckets for the Lady Indians to start the frame.

Lizzie Nessling (eight points) started an 8-0 run for Couch with a jumper in the lane, followed by two straight hoops from Cassie Roberts (six points) and layup by Jones, extending the lady Indians' cushion to 30-5.

Combs and Jordan Hale nailed a trey apiece near the end of the second to help Couch to a 38-10 lead at intermission.

Summersville just could not match the Lady Indians' quickness up and down the court, and with just seven players in uniform, the Lady Wildcats began to wilt in the second half and trailed 55-16 after three.

The Lady Indians wrapped up the contest by outscoring Summersville 10-5 in the final frame to coast to a 44-point win over the Lady Wildcats.

Aminta Garrison, Calee Risner, Rachel Armstead and Alisha Reynolds tallied two points each for Couch, with Stephanie Nessling adding one point.

Kandace Dugger led Summersville with eight points.

Couch blasted the Liberty Lady Eagles 57-23 Feb. 23 behind 18 points from Mills and 11 by Combs.

The Lady Indians dropped their third game of the season, a tight 47-41 loss to Class 3 Blue Eye Feb. 21.
