Gladys Marie Combs, 88, of Alton, Mo., was born June 19, 1920, and died Feb. 24, 2009, at her home.
Gladys had been an insurance secretary, a clerk for the Probate Court, Assistant Postmaster at Couch and was the first woman to serve as Oregon County Tax Assessor.
Survivors include: one son, Keith Combs and wife Shirley of Alton; son-in-law, Bob Anderson of Alton; two brothers, Waif Strain of West Plains, Mo., and Bob Strain of Ridgedale, Mo.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Orville Strain and Ola Barton Strain; two husbands, David Combs and Oliver "Nick" Nickless; one daughter, Norma Jean "Jeanie" Anderson; one grandson, David Anderson; four brothers, Mac, Earl, Wallace and Wayman Strain; and three sisters, Helen, Agnes and Juanita.
Services were held Feb. 26 in the Clary Chapel at Alton with burial in the Smith Cemetery.
