CLOSING: Columbia Flooring to shut its doors in May

Thursday, March 5, 2009

Many people will be looking for jobs soon.

Columbia Flooring, a hardwood flooring plant in Melbourne, is closing its doors in May for an indefinite period of time.

Due to the economy and the housing crisis, many people are not buying homes, much less building them. According to Columbia Flooring officials, this nationwide problem has caused the Melbourne plant to shut down.

According to a press release from the company, "Columbia, a leading manufacturer of hardwood flooring, reduced its workforce at the Melbourne facility and at other locations in January as part of an ongoing effort to align production capacity with consumer demand."

But, as many have seen, read and heard, due to the slacking economy, consumer demand is down for just about everything except the bare necessities.

"The current economy forces companies to make difficult but necessary business decisions," Vice President of Human Resources Shelley Yeary said.

"The severe decline in the overall economy and the housing market has significantly reduced the demand for hardwood flooring by over 40 percent industry wide," Vice President of Operations Randy Smith said.

"This is not a reflection of the plant's performance but a decision solely based on the decline in consumer demand," Yeary said. "Our primary concern right now is offering support to the men and women who work at the Melbourne plant."

According to Columbia Flooring, the plant will work with the Arkansas Department of Labor to help employees find other jobs in the area.

"According to Smith, Columbia hopes to resume production in the Melbourne facility once the demand returns and the market improves. He indicated that the company constantly assesses its manufacturing needs and would continue to evaluate the plant's future as business conditions evolve," the press release states.
