Don Gibson, West Plains Motor Speedway promoter, recently announced the 2009 race schedule for his 3/8-mile red clay oval track, located just 6 miles south of West Plains on US Highway 63.
Following the second practice session on March 14, the 10th annual Stanfill Memorial Modified Special will kick-off the first three-night special event of the season.
The event is sponsored again this year by Larry Shaw Race Cars, along with Mark Martin Ford and Chevrolet.
The Stanfill Special usually draws a good field of cars and features a format that includes three seperate nightly feature events paying $1,000, $1,500 and $2,500, followed by a total points bonus payout of $1,000.
Gates will open each night at 6 p.m., with hotlaps at 7:30 p.m., and racing at 8 p.m.
The 10th annual Race Car Show will be held on March 28 from 10 a.m. to noon on the parking lot at the Wal-Mart Super Center in West Plains.
Winners of the show will be determined by the penny-per-vote method and all proceeds will go to St. Jude Children's Hospital. Everyone displaying a car will receive a trophy, courtesy of Coca-Cola and O'Reilly Auto Parts.
Following the Race Car Show, drivers will have their last opportunity to test and tune at the final practice session before the full points season gets underway. Hours for the practice will be 1-5 p.m., and admission will be $10 with spectators invited to watch for free.
An exciting new addition to the weekly race program this year will be the Fastrak Late Model Series. Also competing weekly will be the ever-popular IMCA Modifieds, Super Stock, Hobby Stock, Cruisers and the Youth Hobby Stock, for 13- to 15-year-olds.
Special events on the schedule include the first-ever appearance of the Mid South Racing Association (MSRA) and the Dirt LateModel Racing Association (DLRA) in a challenge event set for April 18, sponsored by K-HOM and The Point.
Another addition to the season will be the Lucas Oil sanctioning of the 17th annual O'Reilly "Show-Me 100," set for May 21-23. This year the feature winner will take home $40,000, while the first runner-up will get $20,000. Start money is $2,000, making this one of the most prestigious events in the country and is referred to as a "crown jewel" in late model events. This event will be carrying a sanction for the first time in its history.
The first appearance of the Show-Me Racin' Series late models will be June 13, sponsored by First National Banking Company (FNBC). The annual Sunoco & Simon's Petroleum sponsored Firecracker Weekend is set for July 2-4.
This Super Stock special will be climaxed by the annual Fireworks Extravaganza, presented by Air Magic, Inc.
The 17th annual Larry Shaw Race Cars and Mark Martin Ford & Chevrolet sponsored Modified Show-Me Championship will begin July 30 and continue through Aug. 1. Dillard Motors will be presenting the WoW Sprint Cars on Aug. 22, with the Coca-Cola Fall Nationals winding up the special events on Sept. 5.
The weekly points program will conclude for all six classes on Sept. 26.
