After playing a game that ended late the night before, the Buffalo Island Central Mustangs elected not to return to Cave City the next morning, vacating their spot in the consolation round of the Sharp County Invitational Tournament.
So with an opening for another team, the Cave City junior varsity Cavemen took BIC's spot opposite the Salem junior varsity Greyhounds March 21.
And with the way they played against the JV Hounds, the JV Cavemen are probably happy the Mustangs canceled.
Cave City put together a five-spot in the bottom of the fourth inning to break open a tight game, beating Salem 12-6.
Salem drew first blood with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.
Nick Gaskins hit safely to lead off the game and then John Turney moved him over with a sacrifice bunt. Chase Steed picked up the RBI with a hit that plated Gaskins.
One batter later, Cody Barnett logged Salem's second ribbie of the first, giving the JV Greyhounds a 2-0 advantage.
But Cave City quickly responded in the home-half of the first.
Kyle Satterwhite, William Boyd and Tyler Poulette all swiped home on balls in the dirt to push the JV Cavemen in front 3-2 after one.
The JV Hounds pulled even in the top of the second when Michael Beck stole home on a passed ball, knotting things at 3-all. With three runs in the bottom of the second, Cave City grabbed the lead for good.
Sam Clem drew a base on balls to start the second, followed by a hit up the middle from T.J. Clay. A sacrifice bunt from Satterwhite moved the runners over and then Boyd smacked a hit that went between the third basemen's legs, driving in two runs on the play. Justin Meskimen finished the damage for Cave City with a hit that drove in Boyd, giving the JV Cavemen a 6-3 lead after two.
Salem kept pace with three runs in the top of the third, started when Steed reached base on a dropped ball in centerfield. Seth Travelstead and Barnett followed with a pair of walks and they both would steal home on passed balls for Salem's first two runs in the third.
Tyler Batterton drove in the JV Hounds' last run of the inning on a fielder's choice with the bases full of Greyhounds.
With Cave City in front 7-6 heading into the bottom of the fourth, the JV Cavemen put the game away with five runs.
Poulette hit safely to center and he would come in to score on an RBI-hit from Clem. Clem then scored thanks to a hit from Clay. Cave City's third straight hit, this one by Satterwhite, drove in the third run of the inning. Boyd reached first on an error and Satterwhite came around to score on the miscue. Robert Davis finished things up with a double that plated Boyd, wrapping up the junior varsity Cavemen's 12-6 win.
