Watson, Massey named All-Stars

Thursday, April 16, 2009

They teamed up to help lead the Melbourne Bearkatz farther than they had ever been, and now they'll team up for the East All-Stars.

After finishing as Class 2A runners-ups this past basketball season, Melbourne Head Coach Mike Watson has been selected as head coach of the East All-Stars, while Bearkat standout Chase Massey will suit up for the East squad.

Derek Baird, also a key cog in the Katz' 37-5 record this season, has been tabbed as manager of the East All-Stars.

The 6-3 Massey averaged 14 points and five boards a game for Melbourne during his senior season.

Melbourne's Lee Lewis was selected as an alternate for the East squad.

The 54th annual Tyson/Arkansas Army National Guard High School Coaches Association's All-Star Basketball games are scheduled for June 25 at Bud Walton Arena on the campus of the University of Arkansas. The girls' game will start at 6 p.m., followed immediately by the boys' contest.

Watson's East staff will include James Bates from Conway, along with Arkansas Baptist's Steve Miller and Stuttgart's Cedric Hawkins.

The West All-Stars will be coached by Fayetteville's Barry Gebhart.

Gebhart's assistants include Farmington's Beau Thompson, Magnolia's Dyun Long and Mountain View's Mike Simmons.
