Coroner remembered

Sharp County citizens shared feelings of dismay and sadness as the news that Sharp County Coroner Randy McComas, 34, was found dead due to an apparent suicide.

Ravenden Chief of Police Tim McComas, Randy's cousin, called Sharp County Sheriff Dale Weaver around 7 p.m., April 8. Tim informed Sheriff Weaver that his father, Frank McComas, had discovered Randy in the cemetery behind the Christian Tabernacle Church on Highway 175.

According to the news release, Sheriff Weaver, Chief Deputy Huffmaster, Detective Mark Counts, Detective Ken Guidry and Special Agent Wendel Jines all responded to the scene. Randy's S.U.V was parked at the said cemetery.

Upon investigation of the incident Randy was found deceased inside of the vehicle. According to the statement, the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest.

Tim, responded to the scene not as the chief of police, but also as a Sharp County deputy coroner. As the coroner, Tim pronounced Randy deceased.

According to the news release, the medical examiner's office arrived and transported Randy's body to the crime laboratory for an autopsy.

At this time, the sheriff's office has stated that no foul play is expected.

"There is just not much more that can be said but that this truly is a tragedy," Sharp County Judge Larry Brown said. "Randy's death will be something we discuss at the quorum court meeting (April 13 at 7 p.m.), but right now we are just all praying for the family."

Funeral services were held April 13 at th Tri-County Funeral Home in Highland. Burial followed in the Eagle's Rest Cemetery near Wirth.

He is survived by: his wife, Michal McComas of the home; his son, Noah Anthony McComas; his father, Mark D. McComas of Saddle; two sisters and brother-in-law, Katrina and Joseph Friel of Saddle, Melissa Scoggins of Commerce, Ga.; one nephew, Hunter Friel; three nieces, Kiersten Friel, Emma Scroggins, Cheyenne Howington; his maternal grandmother, Lena Goodwin of Ash Flat; his paternal grandparents, Robert and Margaret McComas of Ash Flat; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Danny and Hope Siebert of Cherokee village; and many other family and friends.

Randy was preceded in death by: his mother, Tamara Ann McComas; and grandfather, John L. Goodwin.

Pallbearers were Phillip Pickett, Tyler Pickett, John Cline, Tim McComas, Phillip Pickett Sr. and Justin Richards.

Honorary pallbearers were Johnny Alexander, Michael Alexander, Joseph Friel, Jason Jackson and Marty Howington.

The family has asked that memorials be made to Noah McComas at First Community Bank in Highland in lieu of flowers.
