Members of Highland High School's Key Club and their sponsor Lou Lynn Paul spent last Saturday helping the Highland VFW with cleanup of their post and grounds.

Members Forest Carithers, Travis Lamb, Tricia Goodwin, Leighann Smith, Carrie Oroz, Bria Bummill and Paul participated in the project.

The boys helped with the outside work such as mowing and picking up the limbs and debris that remained after the ice storm while the girls worked inside. They made the post sparkly clean by mopping, sweeping, kitchen and yes, even bathroom cleanup.

While doing the cleanup the students were able to visit with VFW members and discuss the many things the VFW does for the community. They were also able to get to know some of the members as well as the location in which they served during their respective times in the military.

Chuck Wolff, VFW member and substitute teacher at Highland High School and Andy Ryan, VFW member, took the opportunity to stress to the students the importance of a good education.

The experience was a wonderful time for both the students and the members to interact and share stories while accomplishing an important and needed task.

The members of Key Club are the leaders of tomorrow and their community service projects prepare them for the future.

The group was very thankful to McDonald's for providing lunch and to the members for the opportunity to help with the clean up.

Paul said, "We enjoy helping members of the community and it is our goal to do more."
