Instead, it was the Lady Pirates that seized the chances they were given and Calico Rock edged past Ouachita 2-1 in the tourney's opening round.
The win was the Lady Pirates' first-ever win in the state softball tournament.
But in order to post that win, Calico Rock had to snuff out two big potential Ouachita rallies.
The first came in the bottom of the third when the Lady Warriors, who were down 1-0, had the bases loaded with two outs.
But instead of plating any runs, Ouachita's half of the inning ended with a pop-out.
Then in the bottom of the seventh, trailing Calico Rock 2-0, the Lady Warriors had yet another shot to grab the lead. With one out in the frame, the Lady Warriors got a runner on board thanks to a bunt that was miss-played.
After a fly-out to center, that runner came around to score on an RBI-single, pulling Ouachita within one run.
But that was as close as the Lady Warriors would get.
A fielders choice ended the Ouachita threat and Calico Rock advanced to the second round of the tourney with a 2-1 victory.
Miranda Jones picked up the win for the Lady Pirates, pitching all seven innings.
She gave up six hits and fanned two while walking none.
The Lady Pirates scored their first run of the afternoon in the visitors half of the second inning.
With one out in the inning, Emily Johnson started Calico Rock off with a single and was followed at the plate by Brandy Deloach.
She laid down a bunt that was mishandled by the Ouachita pitcher and the ball ended up out of the reach of the Lady Warriors' first baseman on the overthrow. Motoring all the way, Johnson came home on the play and Deloach ended up at third. That one run was all Calico Rock could get in the second, as a pop-out and fielder's choice left Deloach stranded on third.
The Lady Pirates added another tally in the top of the third.
Malory Brannon reached base on a deep hit that popped out of the right fielder's glove. Then Jones dropped down a bunt and made it safely to first. Emily Jenkins followed that with a blooper that fell behind third base to load the sacks for Calico Rock.
With Johnson in the batter's box, Brannon came home on a passed ball to give Calico Rock a 2-0 lead.
And the way it turned out, those two runs were just enough for the Lady Pirates to taste victory in the state softball tournament.
In quarterfinal action May 2, the Lady Pirates fell to Armorel 9-4.
Calico Rock took a 3-0 lead in the second inning as Johnson, Jenkins and Fry all hit and all scored runs.
Armorel was trailing 4-3 in the fifth inning when the Lady Tigers exploded for six runs to pull in front 9-4.
