Thursday, May 7, 2009

The Melbourne Lady Bearkatz won their second straight regional tournament title with a 5-0 victory over Salem in the 2A North Region finals April 27.

The Lady Katz scored two runs in the first inning, one in the fourth and two more in the sixth to round out the scoring.

Maggie Cooper was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits while walking none and fanning three.

Tori Rush had three hits for the Lady Katz.

Kenzi Gillihan and Michelle Arnold logged two hits apiece.

In the semi-final round, the Lady Bearkatz pushed past Midland 8-2.

Gillihan had four hits, with Cooper adding three, including a triple.

Christy Bigness slammed a three-run double for Melbourne.

Due to the wave of heavy rain and storms that moved through the state on May 1, Melbourne and Salem's opening-round games in the 2A State Softball Tournament in Rogers were rained out twice.

The contests were rescheduled for May 4.
