Dolan Johnston came through at just the right time.
He belted a big three-run homer over the left field fence in the bottom of the fifth, breaking open a tie game and giving the Viola Longhorns a 4-1 victory over Hillcrest in the championship game of the 1A Region 2 Tournament April 28.
The game was played at the Cougar Sports Complex in Brockwell after a downpour at Viola City Park earlier in the afternoon forced a change of venue.
Jacob Payne earned the win for Viola, striking out 13 while giving up just one hit to the Screamin' Eagles, a team that was ranked number one in Class 1A at the time. Payne walked two and hit two Hillcrest hitters.
The game was locked at 1-all in the fifth when Johnston delivered the game-winning bomb.
His round-tripper drove in Matt Prinner and Jesse Shrable.
Hillcrest loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Payne racked up a strikeout to end the game.
Screamin' Eagle starter Derek Wooten struck out 14 Longhorns, while giving up four hits.
The Longhorns' season came to an end with an 8-6 loss to Kirby in the first round of the state tournament May 1 in Magnolia.
