Cobb arrested on attempted murder charge

Thursday, May 14, 2009

Following an early morning 9-1-1 call on May 7, Cave City Police Chief Aaron Presser responded to a residence at 407 Stout Street in Cave City in regard to a shooting incident that ended with 30-year-old Bobby Joe Cobb being arrested for attempted first degree murder.

The 9-1-1 call was received at 5:28 a.m., from Devonda Furr who said a shooting had occurred at her home.

When Presser arrived on the scene, he said the front door was open and a male that Presser knew to be Bobby Cobb was sitting in the living room on a couch.

According to Presser, Cobb said he had dropped his pistol and that it had accidentally discharged and shot Gar Jacobs. When asked about Jacobs location, Furr told Presser that Larry Rudick had taken him to the hospital.

Detective Sergeants Mark Counts and Ken Guidry arrived at the scene at 6 a.m. and were briefed by Presser about the incident including identifying the pistol as a hi-point 9 millimeter which Presser told Counts was on the coffee table in the living room.

According to Counts, in statements given to the detectives at the Sharp County Sheriff's Department, Cobb initially told detectives that he had the pistol in the front pocket of his pants and he had taken it out to put it on the table and dropped it, causing the firearm to discharge.

Counts said, following his statement Cobb began telling the investigators about some problems he had with Jacobs in the past. He told detectives that Jacobs had stuck a needle into his hand while he was sleeping and had accused him of being a child molester. Cobb then told the detectives that this made him angry at Jacobs.

According to Counts, Cobb then stated that he shot Jacobs in the jaw. Cobb told Counts and Guidry that he had pointed it (the pistol) at him and shot him in the jaw while he was sleeping and compared the gun shot to the alleged needle incident with the victim.

Cobb was escorted to the Sharp County Jail where he awaits his first hearing on the charge of attempted first degree murder. As of press time the bond had not been set.
