Thursday, May 14, 2009

The Melbourne Lady Bearkatz and Salem Lady Greyhounds both fell in the quarterfinals of the 2A State Softball Tournament May 4 at Veterans Park in Rogers.

The tourney was scheduled to get underway May 1, but heavy rains and un-cooperative weather pushed back the start of the event three days.

Melbourne lost to Junction City 10-5, while the Lady Hounds were knocked off by Foreman 4-0.

In the state championship game May 8 at Bogle Park on the University of Arkansas campus, Foreman knocked off Junction City 4-0 to win its fourth straight state title.

Both Melbourne and Salem opened state tournament play with victories earlier in the day on May 4.

Melbourne routed Decatur 13-3 in five innings, while Salem sent Magazine home with an 8-6 loss.

In the Lady Katz' 10-run win over the Lady Bulldogs, Melbourne broke open a 3-all tie by crossing the plate seven times in the fourth inning.

Maggie Cooper tossed a no-hitter for the Lady Bearkatz, striking out six and walking six.

Megan Whitehurst belted a two-run homer in the game, while Michelle Arnold added a triple and Tori Rush hit a double.

In Melbourne's loss to the Lady Dragons of Junction City, Arnold and Whitehurst notched two hits apiece, while Abbi Miller and Rush each ripped a double.
