The Viola Lady Longhorns fell to the Scranton Lady Rockets 3-2 in the quarterfinals of the 1A State Softball Tournament at Regional Park in Pine Bluff May 4. The contest started two days earlier, but was postponed until May 4 when lightning and heavy rains swept through the state.
In the state championship game May 8 at Bogle Park on the University of Arkansas campus, Scranton knocked off Nemo Vista 2-0.
Viola took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning against the Lady Rockets as Lindsay Walker plated Elisabeth Collins with a hit to right field.
Chasidy Hutson then drove in Alex Duncan with a base hit to put the Lady Horns up 2-0.
But in the sixth inning, Scranton scored two runs on a double, then on a play at the plate, the runner was tagged out but was awarded home plate for the go-ahead run after an illegal block of home was ruled by the home-plate umpire.
Viola threatened in the seventh inning as Collins reached first on a base hit and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Collins then moved to third on a fielder's choice.
But a ground-out ended the game with Collins stuck on third and the Lady Rockets on top 3-2.
