Man drowns on river

Thursday, May 28, 2009

A day of swimming and fun ended in tragedy Wednesday, May 20 on the South Fork River. Clayton Heath Lesley. 38, of Ash Flat drowned at Slick Rock Bridge in rural Cherokee Village.

Lesley was swimming upriver from the bridge and was swept into a large tile under the bridge. A witness said that Lesley was able to hold on for a while before being pulled into the tile.

Deputy Coroner Doug Wortham said that water was running over the bridge and Lesley was pulled under the bridge by the under-current and swept down-stream. Wortham says there used to be a grate under the bridge when it was first constructed.

His body was recovered approximately 100 yards downstream from the bridge.

Lesley was pronounced dead at the scene by Fulton County Deputy Coroner Doug Wortham.
