A business in Thayer reported to the Thayer Police Department that they had found a counterfeit $5 bill in their cash register, according to Thayer Police Chief David Bailey.
Bailey said he is wanting to alert area businesses of the discovery so they might be able to watch for any suspicious bills. He said this has been the only counterfeit bill that has shown up.
"The bill was done very well," Bailey said. He said one would have to look closely at the bill to know it was a fake.
Bailey said the bill seemed to feel like ordinary copy paper. "But, if you're in a hurry you wouldn't notice (the bill is a fake)," he said.
Bailey said the bill has been sent to a crime lab for analysis.
If anyone locates other counterfeit bills they are to contact the Thayer Police Department at 264-3819.
