West honored by AGFC

Thursday, June 4, 2009

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, represented by Lynn B. Fair (the private lands biologist for the wildlife management division for northeast Arkansas) presented Terry S. West a plaque for the first-place winner of Region #1, which covers 10 counties in the northeast part of the state.

West also took second place statewide in the AGFC wildlife management program competition.

West is president of Janes Creek Hunting Club in Randolph County.

Over the last 40 years, West has worked in conjunction with AGFC and their wildlife habitat conservation programs to improve genetic quality and blood lines and produce healthier herds of whitetail deer, wild turkey and small game.

In the 1980s, West pioneered by introducing new whitetail blood lines to Arkansas whitetail deer by trading Arkansas deer for Wisconsin whitetail buck.

This buck produced multiple offspring trophy deer within a large high fenced-in area. Over a 10-year period, West raised, tagged and released this new strain of whitetail deer in Randolph and Sharp County.

Realizing that perpetuating quality and healthy wildlife is an on-going responsibility for not only the present generation, but future generations, as well, West has given by mentoring younger sportsmen and encouraging them to appreciate and follow the programs recommended by AGFC.

West believes that you "reap and harvest what you sow" even in hunting and fishing.

West has been adamant over the years to be "green" and preserve our wildlife, even before it was the popular thing to do.

West continues to introduce friends and neighbors to the game and fish wildlife habitat biologic conservation programs.

West, a retired Mississippi delta rice farmer and licensed private pilot, is also a real estate broker, and along with wife Fran, have been brokers/owners of Video Real Estate in downtown Hardy since 1991.

During the 1980s, West harvested a 25-point whitetail deer in Randolph County, a deer that scored 205 points. He also harvested a silver medal record book Big Horn sheep in Texas, along with trophy antelope in Wyoming and a trophy moose in British Columbia.

West holds the 2005 Arkansas state largemouth bass record with a fish that weighed 14 pounds, 2 ounces, taken from the AGFC lake in Monticello. West has hunted and fished from the Florida Keys to the Alaskan Aleutian Peninsula, but still prefers hunting and fishing in Arkansas.

During the 1980s and 90s, Terry and Fran produced, directed and starred in several outdoor wildlife safari videos, including: "Plains & High Country Adventures," "Tundra Caribou at the End of the Alaskan Rainbow" and "Dan Haggerty's Guide to Turkey Hunting."

West also had a role in the "Frank & Jesse" movie, along with Bill Paxton and Randy Travis, that was filmed in northeast Arkansas.
