Walker adds 7-footer to Grizzly roster

Thursday, June 25, 2009

Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzly Basketball Head Coach Yancey Walker added some height to his 2009-10 squad recently with the addition of Sam Sopolinski, a seven-foot center from Allanson, Western Australia.

"Sam's size is obviously going to be a huge plus for our team," Walker said. "On top of that, he rebounds hard, he runs the floor hard, he works hard for position in the post, and he has the weight and aggression to go with his size. He also understands and embraces the academic advantages that our institution provides. He is another great fit for our program."

Sopolinski played on the Under-18 Western Australia Junior Nationals State Team, the Under-20 Western Australia Junior Nationals State Team and was on the practice squad for the Under-19 Australian Emu Team, which competed in the world championships, Walker said.

"I am happy to be going to Missouri State University-West Plains," Sopolinski said. "They will provide the opportunity I need, both academically and athletically. The exposure their basketball team gets will really help my basketball career a lot. It helped that they already had Kyle (Armour), but I chose that school because of the academic support they provide to all athletes."

Sopolinski is the 12th player added to the Grizzly squad during this year's recruitment period.

Other additions include Gage Wooten, a 6-4 wing/forward from Centennial, Colo.; Ternell Davis, a 6-1 combo guard from Ashburn, Ga.; Tommy Williams, a 6-4 wing from Jacksonville, Ark.; Timmy Wright Jr., a 6-3 guard from Huntsville, Ala.; Quinton Pippen, a 6-4 small forward from Hamburg High School in Hamburg, Ark.; Kyle Armour, a 6-0 point guard from Perth, Australia, who came on board in January this year as a redshirt freshman; Dane Lottner, a 6-4 shooting guard from Jacksonville, Ark.; Chris Mason, a 6-1 point guard from Memphis, Tenn.; Twann Oakley, a 6-5 shooting guard from Memphis, Tenn.; Teddy Simniok, a 6-7 wing/forward from Forsyth, Mo.; and Nathane Simniok, a 6-6 forward from Forsyth, Mo.
