Chamber discusses fireworks show

Thursday, July 2, 2009

Finalization of planning for the July 4th celebrations was discussed at a special Thayer Chamber of Commerce meeting June 24 at the Los Patrillos Mexican Restaurant.

According to Bob Eckman, Air Evac is scheduled to land a helicopter the day of the fireworks unless they receive a medical call. A car show is also scheduled at the park before the fireworks show begins.

"The fireworks are coming along," Eckman said. "Last year, we collected $8,445." He said last year the Chamber took on more expenses, which totaled $7,950. The Chamber ended with a profit of $495, not including profits from concessions.

To date, Eckman said the Chamber has $4,690 pledged from area businesses and residents towards the fireworks. "This $8,445 (from last year) is a little bit false because $2,200 of that was Chamber money," Eckman said. "So, you take that off and you're looking at $6,200, roughly."

He said it is possible that the Chamber could have more pledges come in before July 4.

Eckman said the band for the celebrations has been secured. He said it is the Dan Ward Band of Hardy, Ark.

"We've got the flag and color guard and I can't tell you how many booths," Eckman said. He said as far as the festivities, things are pretty well in order.

There were still some issues as to food preparation, though. The barbecue meat that will be served at the celebration is ready, but buns, drinks, pickles, chips and candy had yet to be purchased. A Chamber member will pick up these items several days before the event.

Glow-in-the-dark necklaces and 3-D glasses will be available for purchase at the event for children and those who want to view the fireworks in 3-D.

The Chamber also created a work schedule for volunteers at the Fourth of July event.

The next regular meeting for the Thayer Chamber of Commerce is July 1 with the following meeting scheduled for July 15 at noon at the Los Patrillos Mexican Restaurant.
