The Jim Hinkle/Spring River State Fish Hatchery hosted its 23rd annual Kids Fishing Derby June 13. Over 600 kids participated in the derby and many reported this was their first fishing trip.
Youth anglers from over 10 states participated and almost no one went home empty handed. Rod-and-reel combos donated by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's Family and Community Fishing Program provided the tagged-fish prizes.
Prizes were also awarded to the two biggest trout caught.
Claryse Sherpinski, 7, from Mammoth Spring, caught the largest fish of the derby weighing 7-1/2 pounds.
Coming in second was Allie Campbell, 9, from Alton. Allie's trout topped the scales at 5.55 pounds.
