The American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) is set to host the third-annual Bass Pro Shops/Payne Stewart Junior Championship July 27-30 at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield.
The 54-hole tournament will feature 99 of the nation's top boy and girl junior golfers, ages 12-18.
In 2008, Kyle McCartan of Plano, Texas, carded a 7-under-par total to win the Boys' Division crown by one shot.
Ani Gulugian of Irvine, Calif., posted a 1-under-par total and finished seven shots ahead of the rest of the field in the Girls' Division competition.
A portion of the 2009 tournament field will be reserved for players earning entry via the 18-hole K12 Qualifier, which will be held July 26 at Rivercut Golf Course.
K12 Qualifiers give juniors an opportunity to play their way in to coinciding AJGA Open tournaments, or earn a tournament exemption or performance star for a future event.
The K12 Qualifier Series offers opportunities for AJGA juniors at approximately 50 AJGA Open events.
Tournament rounds will begin July 28.
Tee times will run from 7 a.m. until 12:20 p.m., starting off the no. 1 tee at Rivercut Golf Course.
An awards ceremony will be held following the final round on July 30.
Spectators are welcome and admission is free.
A Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament will take place on July 27 and according to event organizers, is an excellent opportunity to entertain clients, reward employees or enjoy a tournament round with friends.
The Junior-Am allows local amateurs to play a competitive round of golf with future stars of the game.
Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Davis Love III, Justin Leonard, Charles Howell III, Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel and Grace Park are just a few of the thousands of talented players who participated in AJGA Junior-Ams when they were teenagers.
The Bass Pro Shops/Payne Stewart Junior Championship is one of 86 events the AJGA will conduct in 2009.
This year, AJGA tournaments will take place in more than 25 states.
The largest Association of its kind, the AJGA has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of more than 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 25 foreign countries.
AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf.
More than 200 former AJGA juniors currently play on the PGA and LPGA Tours and have compiled more than 350 wins.
AJGA alumni include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Stewart Cink, Davis Love III, Cristie Kerr, Pat Hurst, Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel and Julieta Granada.
