Walking into the recently remodeled salon at Hair Kreations, you instantly feel a welcoming presence. From the friendly smiles of the stylists to the relaxing massage chairs in the waiting room, it's apparent that pampering is on the menu.

Owner Karen Bontrager opened the first Hair Kreations on Pickren Street in 1999, and moved to the current location on Church Street April 1, 2003, just across from Town and County.

"I always loved doing beauty. I went to beauty school in California, and it's just something that I always liked doing, and once my kids were out of school, I went to school for myself," said Bontrager.

The friendly atmosphere continues on in the staff, who treat each other like an extended family.

"We're all like family and every one of us has a lot talent. Even when we're not working, we all hang out with each other. We're very fortunate in that we all get along so well," said Bontrager

The Bontragers moved to Salem back in March of 1996, after several visits to friends in the area convinced them that Salem was a great place to live.

"We had friends here in Salem that we had visited many times, and we decided that this was where we wanted to raise our children," said Bontrager.

The salon has five beauticians on staff, including Bontrager, and offers a full line of salon items.

"We offer haircuts for men, women and children," said Bontrager. "Hair color, weaves, perms, waxing; we have a tanning bed and we offer the airbrush tanning which has become really popular."

The newly remodeled interior is the result of a burst water pipe last December. Bontrager says that even in the face of the water damage, the employees came together to restore the shop.

"We had a pipe bust in the attic, and all the girls pitched in and helped with the repairs and decorating," said Bontrager. "In the future, I hope to see the shop continue to grow, both as a family and through our clientele."
