Local Business Spotlight ... Nails by Christy

Wednesday, August 5, 2009

Christy Springstun offers all types of acrylic nails, including air brushing, freehand designs and glitter acrylics. Each of her sets is a veritable piece of wearable art.
Christy Springstun of Nails by Christy is an artist who specializes in wearable art of the acrylic fingernail kind. But it wasn't until a friend gave her a little push that she decided to make a career out of it.

"I had a knack for it, for doing nails, and it was Karen at Hair Kreations who told me with my talent that I really needed to go to school and do this for a living," said Springstun. "I don't see myself doing anything else -- I really enjoy it."

Springstun attended Parkway Beauty Academy in West Plains, Mo., before returning to Salem to begin her business. Although she's worked both for herself and others over the years, she has always remained in Salem.

"I meet a lot of different people and I enjoy talking with people every two weeks. You get to know them, and know their families," said Springstun. "Some clients I've had for eight years. One customer of mine comes every single week and she's been coming for six years."

Springstun offers a wide variety of styles and is willing to work with a customer on exactly what she wants.

"I can do elegant, classy, funky, wild, crazy, retro, groovy -- it's up to the client to tell me how wild they want to go. I can go from plain French manicure to as wild and crazy as they want to let me," said Springstun. "Most times, people come in and tell me what colors they want, and let me create something unique for them. I had a young girl come in and she brought her sixth grade graduation dress and I matched her nails to it. It was black, red and white tie die, so I colored her tips in a black, red and white tie die design."

Springstun's work isn't only noticed in Salem. She was recently honored as a featured member on the Web site, www.coolnailsart.com.

"You can log on there and click on the members tab at the top, and you can see photos of my work," said Springstun.

Potential customers can also check out Springstun's Myspace page at www.myspace.com/nailsbychristy to see additional photos.

"I do a lot of airbrushing and hand painting on nails, a lot of acrylic art where it's all done in acrylic so you don't have to worry about it chipping," said Springstun. "In the summer it's all about pedicures -- a lot of toe art in the summer with sandals and open toed shoes."

Springstun takes appointments at Hair Kreations on Church Street Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and sometimes on Friday, and takes late appointments on Tuesday and Wednesday.

So, the next time you're feeling a bit adventurous about your nail color, stop by Nails by Christy and let her create some wearable art on your fingertips.

I've been going to Christy for my nails for several months now, and she always does a fantastic job. I'm so glad she's here in Salem.

I would like to Thank all of my customers that I have and that I have had over the years. Without you my job would not be as fun and rewarding.
