Old Soldiers reunion comes to town

Wednesday, August 5, 2009

It's that time of year again. The time for veterans to get out and dust off their war memorabilia and tell their stories to a younger generation. The 116th Old Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Air Force Reunion will be Aug. 10 through Aug. 15 at the Mammoth Spring State Park. As usual, the event is sponsored by the Mammoth Spring VFW Post 7831.

Dorthy Parks, Ladies Auxiliary president, announced events will begin Monday at the Pavillion with "Elvis" by Sonny Aaron Bogart performing at 7 p.m.

Tuesday, Aug. 11, the Ladies Auxiliary will sponsor a talent show for both youth and adults. Both talent shows will be that day starting at 7 p.m. Performers do not have to pre-register to be in either talent show, but the Auxiliary asks they be at the Pavillion between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. There will be first, second and third place prizes of $75, $50 and $25 respectively. This year's chairperson for the talent shows is Pat Lowman.

Wednesday evening, "Elvis" by Bogart will return to perform a variety of music.

The Patriotic Evening will be Friday with entertainment by Jeff and Diane Thorpe of Evening Shade. "We encourage all veterans and everyone to come out and show your pride by wearing red," Parks said.

Saturday at 2 p.m. the 45th Arkansas Calvary will hold a Civil War Reenactment and Encampment. There will be tours of the encampment, drills deployed and canon firing demonstrations. Saturday night performances will be by Sue Barr of Mountain Home with a variety of music.

A kids day is also in the works for Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The VFW will also have two drawing contests for the kids at 5 p.m. for $50 each at the VFW trailer. They must have their ticket and be present to win.

The Ladies Auxiliary will also raffle off a quilt made by Betty Kellett and a cedar chest Saturday at 10 p.m. The Jr. Girls Unit of the Ladies Auxiliary will also raffle off chances to win a quilt.

Rada knives and cookbooks will be available at the Ladies Auxiliary booth every night of the Reunion.

The carnival, sponsored by Fun Time Shows, will open each day of the Reunion at 6 p.m. Armbands will be available for $15. Quarter bingo will also be played each day at 6 p.m.
