Breaker failure causes area power outage

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

Electricity went amiss in Fulton County when a power outage occurred at about 12:40 p.m. on Aug. 10 in Salem, Viola, Glencoe and surrounding areas, lasting nearly one hour.

North Arkansas Electric Cooperative reported the loss of power occurred because of breaker failure at the Viola substation, according to a press release.

Earlier Monday morning, "NAEC switched transmission load from the Glencoe substation to the Viola substation in an effort to isolate a transmission line," the release said. "The isolation was needed to conduct repairs on the transmission line which suffered damage from the ice storm."

After the load was transferred, a breaker in the Viola substation caused power loss to Salem's two substations. NAEC personnel responded immediately to the situation and had power restored to everyone within an hour, the release said.
