Couch School Board sets tax rate

The Couch R-1 School Board met in special session Aug. 10 in the school library for the annual tax rate hearing.

The following members were present: Dean Britt, Joe Garrison, Tim Garrison, Jeff Lawrence and Jesse Williams Jr.

The tax rate for the 2009-2010 school year has been set at $3.43. The tax hearing then adjourned and the board went into regular session. The following members were present: Dean Britt, Joe Garrison, Tim Garrison, Jeff Lawrence, Kimberly Martin and Jesse Williams Jr.

The board agreed to spend Title I and Special Education Part B stimulus funds to build a new classroom building.

Superintendent Tom Bull informed the board on some problems in the Adequate Yearly Progress Report.

Bull also said the school did not receive the School Food Service Grant applied for earlier in the summer.

The superintendent also discussed maintenance improvements made at the school during the summer and pointed out several projects around the school still needing completion.

Bull also informed the board of a parental concern recently discussed.

The Application/Agreement for Free and Reduced Meals was approved as well as the 2008-2009 Annual Secretary of the Board Report.

The board-paid portion for group health insurance increased to $300 per month for full-time school district employees and the school board agreed to pay it.

The board was made aware of the Couch Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) meeting the same day at 6 p.m. They were informed that the PTO will send a parental letter in student packets to encourage participation in the organization. The PTO also discussed plans for the next meeting and upcoming events.

During executive session, the board voted to approve the substitute teacher, substitute cook and substitute bus driver lists.

The next regular session of the Couch School Board of Education is scheduled for Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. in the school library. All are welcome to attend.
