Ambulance Tax goes down

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

The Oregon County Ambulance District Board met Aug. 20 and voted to reduce the property tax amount collected for ambulance funding by 25 percent.

The state's maximum allowance for funding of ambulance services increased, according to state law, this year from 14.06 cents in 2008 to 14.76 cents per $100 assessed property.

A half cent sales tax was passed in Nov. 2008 and took effect April 1, 2009. The ambulance district has collected about three to four months of the revenues from the sales tax. According to the board, state law allows one full year for the collection of sales tax before a reduction of property tax is mandated.

Though it has not been a full year that the sales tax has been collected, the board voted to reduce the tax rate by 25 percent of the 2008 state tax rate. The tax rate is now set at 10.55 cents per $100 of assessed value of property.
