Freshman running back Sterling Stowers rushed for 63 yards on 15 carries and quarterback Quinton Maag threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Brennon Severn, but the Highland junior Rebels couldn't hold off the Hoxie junior Mustang running game, losing the season opener 22-6 at Rebel Memorial Field on Sept. 3.
Both teams were held out of the end zone through most of the first half.
The junior Rebs were in Mustang territory late in the second quarter. However, two consecutive false starts followed by a bad snap over Maag's head penalized the team 30 yards. Unable to get a first down, Highland gave Hoxie just enough time to score before the half.
Junior Mustang running back Robert Vaughn broke through the middle for a 3-yard touchdown and a 6-0 lead with just 14 seconds left in the second.
Hoxie quarterback Zach Crisler took the first play of the second half 80 yards for a 14-0 lead.
The Rebs responded with a 13-play, 56-yard drive that finished with the Maag-Severn touchdown with 1:16 left in the third. This drive was set up by Stowers' 27-yard kickoff return.
Crisler immediately drove his team down for another score, an 11-yard Crisler rumble up the middle. Highland, 0-1, will travel to Harrisburg on Sept. 10.
