An item resembling a bomb was found in a field behind a home in Byron on Sept. 2.
Fulton County Deputy Lance Gray received a call at about noon on Sept. 2 of a reported bomb located within the city limits of Byron in Fulton County. By the time Gray arrived, the item, "about the size of a flashlight," had been moved to the front yard of the Byron residence that had called it in, Gray said.
After realizing what the item probably was, Gray called for the Arkansas State Police in Harrison. The Criminal Investigations Division (CID) in Harrison immediately responded, Gray said.
He kept the residents at a distance from the item until he was relieved from the scene by Deputy Boyd Daily, who was present when officers of Company E of the Arkansas State Police CID arrived.
The device itself was non-functional, said Lieutenant Bill Beach of CID. It appeared to have been there for from several months to a year. It would have been classified as something similar to a pipe bomb, Beach said.
