The Salem Mighty Mite Greyhounds opened the 2009 season by battling the Thayer Bobcats Sept. 12.
The third-grade Hounds took to the gridiron for the first time and their clash with the Bobcats went back-and-forth. But in the end, Thayer took a late lead and knocked off Salem 26-14.
In a game that did not disappoint, the fouth-grade teams locked into a defensive battle. However, Salem was able to get scores on both offense and defense to top the Bobcats 12-0.
In the mid-day game, the fifth-grade teams tussled through most of the first half, before Thayer got the momentum in the second half and found victory over the Hounds by a count of 20-0.
The closing game featured two excellent sixth-grade teams that have fought each other tooth-and-nail for the past three years. And this time would be no different. The game was tied late, but Salem found a burst of offense and then used stout defense to knock off the Bobcats 20-14.
The Salem Mighty Mite Association thanks the youth and parents of the community, along with sponsors NAEC, Barker Funeral Home, Bank of Salem, and Early Horizons.
