Lady Cougars bag regional title

Rachel Harmon earned medalist honors, helping to to lead the Izard County Lady Cougars to the Class 2A Region 2 girls' golf championship at Coopers Hawk Golf Course Sept. 18.

Harmon fired a 75, two shots better than runner-up Maggie Cooper of Melbourne, to earn regional medalist honors for the third straight year.

The Lady Cougars shot 278 as a team, aided by the 81 of third-place individual finisher Kiley Mettler. Kristin Doty shot 122 to round out the scoring for Izard County.

Melbourne was second in the team standings at 332, seven strokes ahead of third-place West Side Greers Ferry.

Haley Wheelis finished with a 118 for the Lady Katz, while Abbey Haley shot a 137.

The top three teams advance to the state tournament, which will also be held at Coopers Hawk on Sept. 29.

Mammoth Spring's Kaitlyn Haney shot 109 to qualify for state individually.

Other individual qualifiers included Emily Johnson of Calico Rock (89) and Abby Blevins of Salem (115).

Samantha Massey carded a 124 for Salem. Calico Rock's Kaitlyn Fry finished with a 130, while Brandy Deloach shot 135 and Sloan Lively 159.
