The Salem Mighty Mite Greyhounds tussled with the Melbourne Bearkatz Sept. 19, and the day kicked off with the third-grade teams going at it.
In this one, Melbourne started quick and was up 20-0 at the half.
But Salem came out strong after the intermission ready to go.
However, the Katz refused to yield and won 20-16.
The fourth-grade squads battled a bit of wet weather, but both teams scored early.
The defenses settled down and dug in, but Melbourne managed to find the end zone to move on top.
The Hounds couldn't get a late score before the clock ran out and the Katz won this one 12-6.
A good, old-fashioned hitting contest was what the fifth-grade clash turned into and the defense ruled this one.
Both offenses moved the ball but just could not get into the end zone and the contest ended in a scoreless tie.
The final contest of the day was the sixth-graders. The teams exchanged scores early and the game was close going into the late going.
Melbourne was able to get a couple more scores down the stretch and the Bearkatz knocked off the Salem Mighty Mites 28-12.
