The Missoui State University-West Plains men's club golf team placed eighth out of 14 teams at Harding University's Bison Fall Golf Classic Sept. 21-22 at the Stone Links Golf Course in North Little.
Freshman Taylor Vanzandt of Cassville paced the Grizzlies in the 36-hole event, shooting rounds of 78 and 69 for a tournament total 147 to finish among the top 20 players.
"Taylor played very well and shot some great scores for us," Head Coach Phil Wade said. "So did J.W. Blevins," Blevins, a freshman from Salem, shot rounds of 75 and 76 for a touranment total of 151.
Freshman Clayton Hodges of Ava made his collegiate debut at the tournament, shooting rounds of 81 and 77 for a total of 158. "This was a good first outing for Clayton," added Wade.
Also playing for the Grizzlies were freshman Dustin Blackburn of Houston and sophomore Josh Kern of Seymour.
Blackburn shot rounds of 79 and 84 for a touranment total of 163, and Kern shot rounds of 84 and 80 for a touranment total of 164.
Wade pointed out the tournament featured teams from both two-year and four-year schools, several of which had proven golfing rounds. "All-in-all, I think we had another good outing. Our scoring improved and we continue to mature as a team. We're also becoming more comfortable competing at the collegiate level, but we still have more work to do," the coach explained.
Up next for the Grizzlies are two scrimmages against Mineral Area College of Park Hills, Mo.
The first wil be Oct. 12 at Crown Pointe Golf Club near Farmington, Mo., and the second will be Oct. 19 at the West Plains Country Club.
