Red Hot Redbird

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Smokin' Joe Cunningham, a former first baseman and left-handed batter who played for the St Louis Cardinals from 1954 to 1961, recently made a guest appearance at the Howell Valley School Gymnasium, as part of a Cardinals' public relations program. The program is an effort to influence youngsters to follow three points: 1. Stay in school; 2. Get involved in sporting activities to stay healthy; 3. Don't do drugs. Cunningham was assisted in the program by the always-entertaining Cardinals' mascot Fred Bird. Students from Junction Hill school were invited guests for the program and Jessie Mae Burkhead from Thayer was a guest of her son, John Burkhead, one of the school administrators. Photo/Looney
