Junior Rebs stay perfect in conference

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Hoxie beat Highland. Valley View beat Hoxie.

The Junior Rebels proved they aren't the same team that got beat during the first game of the season.

Stiff defense and the running ability of Sterling Stowers kept the junior Rebs perfect in conference with a 30-19 win over the Junior Blazers at home on Oct. 8.

"We played outstanding tonight against a very good Valley View team. They beat Hoxie, the only team to beat us this year," said Junior Rebel Head Coach Spencer Hill. "We challenged our kids all week and it's really fun as a coach to see your kids rise to the challenge and play well."

Stowers scored on a 60-yard run early in the first period and again on a 33-yard scamper in the second quarter.

Also in the second, quarterback Quinton Maag hit Michael Copeland for a 9-yard touchdown, and then found Brennon Severn for 16-yard TD pass.

Stowers led the junior Rebels with 202 yards on 16 carries.

Maag was six-of-nine for 92 yards passing.

Ashton McClure had 10 tackles to lead Highland, and Xavier Weind had eight. Copeland intercepted two Blazer passes.

"Tonight, we played extremely hard and extremely focused and that showed out on the field," explained Hill. "We talk every week about getting better and improving, and that's what we've done."

Highland (5-1, 4-0) will travel to Pocahontas on Oct. 15.
