Lady Grizzlies knock off Land Lake College

The Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzly Volleyball team's record now stands at 13-6 with last week's 25-22, 25-17, 25-18 victory over Lake Land College in Mattoon, Ill.

"We didn't really know what to expect from Lake Land," Grizzly assistant volleyball coach Courtney Hendrickson said. "We started off slow, but we picked it up. Our players did well. I'm happy they pulled away with a win in three games."

Sophomore outside attacker Briana Walsh set the pace for the Grizzlies offensively with nine kills on 13 attempts with two errors for an attacking percentage of .538.

Sophomore middle attacker Kate Stepanova also had nine kills on 18 attempts with one error for an attacking percentage of .444.

They were followed by redshirt freshman middle attacker Sabina Papala, who had eight kills on 12 attempts with two errors for an attacking percentage of .500.

Both Stepanova and Papala had three blocks and earned 12 points for the team in the match.

Sophomore setter/outside attacker Patricia Figueiredo had the best attacking percentage during the contest, scoring four kills on five attempts with no errors for .800.

She also led the team in assists with 19, followed closely by freshman setter Lia Havili, who had 16 assists.

Also recording kills were sophomore right side/middle attacker Lindsey Hale, who had five kills on 11 attempts with one error for an attacking percentage of .363; and sophomore middle attacker Danielle Parker, who had five kills on nine attempts with two errors for an attacking percentage of .333.

Papala, Figueiredo, Havili and freshman libero Janel Glidden each recorded one ace during the contest and Stepanova and Havili led the team in digs with seven each.

Glidden and Figueiredo each had five.

The Grizzlies, currently ranked ninth in the nation by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), also competed in the Miami Dade College Invitational Tournament Oct. 9-10 in Miami, Fla.
