The halls of Highland Middle School were crawling with students and teachers dressed in what appeared at first to be an early Halloween costume parade Oct. 15, but the event was of a more educational nature.

Students dressed as their favorite book characters for the day. The Second Annual Book Character Day was a part of the Arkansas Department of Educations standards for developing good characterization skills.

Laura Ingalls Wilder, Anastasia, football players, Madaline, Winn Dixie, Michael Jackson and numerous others dressed to the hilt displaying for their fellow classmates and students their love for reading.

The fun didn't end with the dress up event. Teachers from fifth through seventh grade also got in on the fun as they too dressed for the special day.

As part of the reading lesson, the students gave presentations in the reading classrooms of Carol Earles, Belinda Hill and Inez Lunsford.

This wonderful way of making book reports fun could be witnessed in the enthusiasm of the students as they proudly stood posing for their pictures.
